Job Summary:

The Paralegal is responsible for providing paralegal support on legal and legislative projects, including preparing, maintaining, and processing legal documents and records pertaining to contracts, lawsuits, claims, condemnations, and other legal matters. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides paralegal support, assists with legal and legislative projects and various sensitive legal and Board matters for each department, including tracking incoming projects and deadlines, maintaining department contacts, and anticipating demand for legal services.
  • Tracks litigation and ensures records of outside counsel are accurate and complete.
  • Interacts with outside counsel and lobbyists to maintain internal deadlines for projects.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential records and files in accordance with MNAA records management system.
  • Proofreads and corrects drafts for grammar, punctuation, and spelling to produce error-free work.
  • Ensures that MNAA meets the required guidelines under the Tennessee Public Records Act
  • Researches and verifies all public records requests for release.
  • Assists with managing and monitoring legal budget, including outside counsel, tracking departmental needs and spending, processing legal invoices for payment, identifying budgetary aberrations, and projecting budgetary needs.
  • Serves as Administrative Assistant to Chief Legal Officer to include calendar management.
  • Monitors attorneys’ memberships, licenses, and continuing legal education requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Manages travel for attorneys in the legal department.
  • Reviews insurance to verify that requirements of contracts, licenses, agreements, and leases are met by contractors prior to final signature.
  • Verifies that sureties on payment and performance bonds are certified, licensed, and have sufficient underwriting limits.
  • Supports MNAA’s commitment to its culture and values, including Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence (RISE).

  • Follows all safety regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Communication: Skill in communicating effectively at all levels of the organization and with stakeholders, both orally and in writing.
  • Computer Use: Skill in using a personal computer, the internet, and other software to perform job-related functions, including ability to manage invoices in finance system.

Qualifications

Required:

Associate's Degree, related field, paralegal certificate from ABA approved program required
2 -4 years related experience
Certified Paralegal
